24/7 Care and Supervision

Inpatient rehabilitation involves living in a facility full time while undergoing an addiction treatment program. Commonly referred to as residential treatment, patients receive care and supervision 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Residents within the program build a community while participating in individual therapy, group therapy, and alternative activities such as exercise, art, and music therapy.

Throughout inpatient treatment, patients will learn to understand what within themselves fuels addiction and how they can mitigate returning to old habits once they are released. Inpatient rehab is the most effective form of drug and alcohol recovery treatment.

Why Choose Inpatient Rehab?

Inpatient rehab is most effective for those who do not have a stable, safe home environment. For many, small things within their home or hometown may trigger a relapse. Additionally, outside of a facility there is always an opportunity to seek out drugs. Usually, inpatient treatment applies to those with the most severe cases of addiction or those who have tried other methods of treatment that did not work.

The various methods of therapy available within inpatient facilities help to treat more than just addiction. Many suffering with substance abuse also suffer from co-occurring mental disorders such as depression or anxiety — behavioral and cognitive therapy are able to treat the mental health issues that intensify addiction along with the physical substance use.

Inpatient rehab treatment also differs based on the substance or substances that were abused by the patient. Again, this is where the variety of therapies available in inpatient rehab centers is extremely useful.

One thing to keep in mind while considering inpatient rehab, however, is the duration of time a patient must live there in order to receive effective amounts of treatment. It is recommended by the National Institute on Drug Abuse that a resident remains in the treatment facility for at least 90 days to feel like they got something out of their experience. For the most severe cases, individuals can reside in facilities for up to a year.

Benefits of Inpatient Rehab

In contrast to outpatient or partial hospitalization programs (PHP), inpatient rehab offers a completely structured schedule tailored to each patient. Each hour of their day is planned out — for many, this is a welcome change as it allows them to be occupied all the time giving patients less time to think about returning to their old ways.

Within this daily schedule are set therapy sessions. Residential programs, whether it be short term or luxury, often have access to an abundance of different kinds of therapy. From classic group or individual therapy to alternative music or art therapy, the resources available within these programs give caretakers many options to create the most effective treatment plan for each patient.

Inpatient rehab centers also have access to prescribed and over-the-counter medications and administer them accordingly. Whereas at home, without supervision the individual may not find the drive to go to a pharmacy or doctor and decide to take medication themselves, patients in residential centers have caretakers keeping them accountable for aiding their own treatment.

A lesser regarded aspect of effective treatment is a change of scenery. Depending on how much a patient or their family can afford to spend on treatment, some luxury facilities place patients on a beach or in the mountains. Of course, the quality of these amenities is dependent on how much one is willing to pay for treatment, but inpatient rehab facilities generally offer three meals a day and spaces of comfort. More expensive facilities may have more forms of alternative treatment and a lower staff to patient ratio, but the basic aspects of effective addiction treatment are available at all inpatient facilities.
